Whether students are “learning to read” or “reading to learn”, the Avon School K-8 English Language Arts curriculum is driven by the New Jersey Student Learning Standards and supported by a structured literacy framework for instruction. Students engage in both targeted whole-class and small group settings with explicit and systematic instruction at the primary grade levels to develop foundational reading and writing skills. Rich texts and authentic learning experiences are designed to promote knowledge and proficiency as readers, writers, and communicators.  Teachers engage in ongoing analysis of formative and summative assessments to inform and personalize instruction down to the individual student, providing a gradual release of responsibility that fosters student independence as readers and writers.
